Krabi

krabi

In 2004 I got the notion that it would be nice to spend Christmas, that year, in Krabi, Thailand. Krabi is in Southern Thailand, and was right in the path of the tsunami that struck on December 26 of 2004. Krabi was virtually destroyed. Fortunately, my plans didn’t work out and we went there three weeks earlier. This is an eerie parallel to my grandfather having missed the Titanic back in 1912.

At the time we visited, Krabi was a beautiful virtual paradise. We enjoyed the ocean, and riding elephants through the jungle. The locals were very helpful and protective but also very aggressive at selling you things. I left with two custom tailored suits.

I have never been back to Krabi since then, and have often pondered the fate of the gracious people who had hosted us.

It is interesting that world disasters seem to coincide with my travels to Thailand. I was there in 1986 when the Challenger exploded. I was also there in 2001 just after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
